My travels took me to Phoenix, AZ. After spending the day climbing towers my coworker/friend/superhuman climbing buddy Ben Kegan and I went to check out the Climbmax gym in Tempe, AZ. We did not get to sample some of the routes that night, but we did get to boulder for a few hours.
Climbmax a is pretty good gym with a VERY friendly atmosphere. It's your typical plywood style gym, with an upstairs and downstairs bouldering area. The upstairs is where most of the majority of the bouldering is, but the downstairs has a very rad overhanging cave with some really good problems on it. This gym uses a C-Scale for grading the problems. I don't know what a C2-, C2, C2+ equates to, but it was fun nonetheless.
After bouldering at The Spot it's hard for me to get real amped about plywood style routes, but Ben and I left with a good impression. The owners and climbers could not have been more friendly and honestly this is what would bring me back more than anything else. The people at Climbmax were some of the coolest people I've come across in my travels. It's a nice break from some of the egos abound in Colorado. Whether they were a V0 or V10+ climber these guys/gals were world class when it came to the warm atmosphere they provided at this gym.
From a scale of 1-5 (1-Worst, 3-Avg, 5-Best)
Quality of gym: 3/4
Quality of boulder problems: 3
Quality of routes: N/A (Did not get to climb routes)
Attitudes of Climbers: 5
Attitudes of Owners: 5
Cost: 3
All in all I would come back, but since this was my first trip to the Phoenix area gym scene I would like to check out the 10+ gyms in the area first.
