Rockreation - Los Angeles, CA

Well we're back in Southern California. Tonight we finally had time to climb after meeting up with my childhood friend Skeet and his wife Sarah in San Diego. So after heading back to LA we checked out the Rockreation gym in town. This was your avg gym with 25-30-ft walls and a bouldering area. They also had an area with treadmills, ellipse, and body building machines. The bouldering area was your average size with some ok features. For some reason most people stood around the backside of a freestanding textured plywood style boulder with mainly consisted of vertical walls. The backside which was pretty overhanging had virtually nobody around. So I searched out good warm ups and started working on some of the harder problems. I'm not sure what the route setters were thinking, but if you are going to overlap problems just because you place a squiggly line, or smiley face on the same color tape it DOES NOT make it less confusing. I stood around for several minutes trying to figure out what was going on till finally I walked away to join the masses on the other side. Waiting in line seemed alot easier than figuring out the cluster-f**k on the other side. One things for certain LA sure has some beautiful people, whoa! Yes I love my wife, but it's just window shopping my love. All in all the vibe was good, and the problems were decent. An avg gym with some pretty friendly people which helped skew my negative view of LA folks. This gym had some really friendly climbers. Maybe I'll go back just because it's only 9 miles from the airport, or I might just hit up the bar instead. $17 for a day pass is f-ing ridiculous.

Gym Overall: 2/3
Quality of bouldering: 3
Quality of routes: 2 (Too short and confusing route finding)
Attitudes of owners/workers: 3/4
Attitudes of climbers: 3/4
Cost: 1 (Anything over $15 is just crazy)
