SLO-OP Climbing Gym - San Luis Obispo, CA

http://www.slo-opclimbing.org/

After leaving Phoenix, AZ Ben and I headed to San Luis Obispo, CA to check out another tower. After work we logged into Indoorclimbing.com and decided between two gyms to check out. After viewing the Crux Climbing Center and SLO-OP gyms on the net it was obvious we were going to check into SLO-OP. The Crux Gym is supposedly a Kid's Only gym without a climbing community.

SLO-OP is a climber ran non-profit bouldering gym. This place is rather small, but it's also open 24/7. The deal is once you become a member they provide you with a key and you can go in and out anytime you please. This is just awesome if you ask me cause at 3am I sometimes get the urge to beast out a few problems!!!

Your first trip to this gym (for the time being) is free, Hell Yeah!!! Then it's just $7 for non-members. It's around 1,400 ft^2 and uses the V-Scale for rating boulder problems. The gym is pretty small. Lucky for us it wasn't too busy. The problems are about 12-ft tall and the use of space in the gym was very good. A soft gym type floor and big pads keep you from hurting yourself. A plywood style bouldering gym with a good atmosphere is what you'll find here. The locals were friendly and the problems were good. This is definitely a good gym to goto if you happen to be in the area and in need of a quick bouldering workout. Although it is free I would recommend helping these gyms out and donating the $7 if you are just stopping by and don't plan on returning. These guys will want to keep this open for as long as possible to avoid heading over to Crux Climbing Center.

Rating (1-Worst, 5-Best)
Quality of gym: 2 (Sorry no routes)
Quality of boulder problems: 3/4
Quality of routes: N/A
Attitudes of owners: 3/4
Attitudes of climbers: 3
Cost: 5

The above is now outdated. After working very hard, These folks just moved into and opened a 3200 sq. ft climbing gym in San Luis Obispo. It's one of the best !
Google Slo-Op Climbing to see the new gym. You'll be impressed !

I heard about this in one of the new climbing magazines. I'll be psyched to check it out the next time I'm in the area!
